Independence Day – how you can have true freedom

Independence Day by Pastor Bruce EdwardsJuly 4th is Independence Day in the USA. It was on this day in 1776 that our country declared it’s independence from England. It would become one of the greatest historic events in world history.

CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY

As we celebrate the birth of our country as an independent nation and the freedom and liberty it enjoys it serves us well to remember the words of several of our forefathers; Thomas Jefferson, “The reason that Christianity is the best friend of government is because Christianity is the only religion in the world that deals with the heart.” Patrick Henry, “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians, not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ!” John Adams, “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people…it is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Abraham Lincoln, “My concern is not whether God is on our side. My great concern is to be on God’s side.” Benjamin Franklin, “He who shall introduce into public affairs the principles of Christianity will change the face of the world.”

America is blessed to enjoy the greatest freedoms and liberties in all the world because of its founding principles, principles based on the Word of God. There is absolutely no question about this fact! On Independence Day let us remember the dedication of our forefathers and the service men and women who have served to keep America free. Also, let us remember to pray for our nation and leaders. With our freedom comes responsibility and we should never take for granted what we have and enjoy.

CELEBRATE YOUR INDEPENDENCE

While we are blessed with freedom and liberty as a Nation having true freedom is only found in Jesus Christ! Every person, no matter where they live, can experience the freedom that comes through faith in Christ. The gospel of John 8:36 tells us ,So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”   There is an independence day for you and all who will but their trust in Jesus.  When you do you can celebrate your independence every day!

BENEFITS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF OUR FREEDOM

Our liberty in Christ is priceless and when used correctly it is an ever-flowing source of spiritual joy and power. We are able to receive that freedom and liberty because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. His death and resurrection have set us free. However, with that freedom comes responsibility. Paul tells us in Galatians 5:1, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” Our liberty is not to be used to feed the desires of our flesh or to give license to Godlessness without consequences. Instead it empowers us to be able to obey God freely and be led by His Spirit – that’s having true freedom!

As believers we have been blessed with great privileges and freedoms. Here are just 4 of our freedoms in Christ:  1) We can freely approach the Throne of Grace in times of need.  2) We are free from the laws of sin and death. 3) We experience liberty in the presence of the Holy Spirit. 4) We are independent from the world and the ways of the world.

This month as we celebrate Independence Day let’s take a few moments to thank God for the freedom that we have in Christ Jesus. I encourage you to examine your life to see if you truly are free or if you’ve allowed the traps of the enemy or cares of the world to lead you back into a path of bondage. It is never too late to turn around. Your Father is waiting with arms open wide He is ¦ready to help liberate you and set you free. Jesus said, “His yoke is easy and His burden is light.” Matthew 11:30

You have true freedom and liberty in Christ! So, those of us in the USA can celebrate the freedom and liberty we have as a nation, but those who are believers in every nation of the world can celebrate independence day in Christ.

Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” 2 Corinthians 3:17
