Easter Eggs and Jesus – the foolishness of Easter

Easter Eggs and Jesus - by Pastor Bruce Edwards

Easter eggs and Jesus what do they have in common?  For the past few weeks if you walk through most stores there are all kinds of displays reminding us that Easter is coming.   The problem is they are displays of only Easter bunnies, colored eggs and baskets filled with candy, but no Jesus.  As a result children and for that matter most adults are more excited about the Easter Bunny  coming than they are about the “Resurrection of Jesus”.

Easter Eggs and Jesus – What does it really mean…

Why colored eggs?  At one time the church did not allow people to eat eggs during “holy week”, the week before Easter Sunday.   The eggs that were laid during that week were saved and decorated to make them ‘Holy Week eggs’, then given to children as gifts.  The egg became a symbol of Jesus’ resurrection.  When an egg is cracked open it symbolizes the empty tomb.   The custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates new life.   For Christians it is a reminder that Jesus, after dying on the cross, rose from the dead. This miracle showed that the life of Jesus triumphed over death.  Christians were not the first to decorate eggs and give them as a gifts.   This tradition along with other customs associated with Easter were adopted from pagan celebrations dating back to the ancient Persians who exchanged eggs at the spring equinox, the great spring festival of Easter  As Christianity adopted many of these pagan Easter customs the church established new traditions, explanations, and meanings for these adopted symbols.

The Foolishness of Easter – the power of the cross

Easter is all about Jesus – His death, burial, and resurrection it is not about eggs!  Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sin and give us life eternal.  He took our sin and gave us His righteousness.

Jesus is Alive

(2Corinthians 5:17) Jesus is alive – the tomb is empty.  In Luke 24 we read how the woman came to the tomb where Jesus was and found the stone rolled away and empty.  In verse 5 we read, “The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead!”  Easter eggs and Jesus – both symbolize Easter, but the real significance of Easter is the  “Resurrection of Jesus” – He is risen from the dead!
